i use windows xp pro and now facing a hell of problems.

1)my system is running at a very slow speed. it takes a lot of time to start and to shut down. when i double click a icon it takes a lot of time to open. Sometimes it just hangs. internet explorer too freezes frequently

    2) this is another strange problem that has been taking place since i upgraded to xp.When i start my system the password window and the next window which says "windows is starting up" comes with a black background like a "high contrast large icon window". but after that it changes to xp look. But after a certain time, say after 3/4 minutes a stange bip comes from the cpu and windows attempts to change its colors for a while to the "high contrast" look but after a second it comes to its default look. now the windows look goes back to it default xp looks changing my modification. Even the wallpaper also changes. it's also a strange thing because i use webshots for my desktop wall paper. This wallpaper changes to a wallpaper saved in my picture. I mean if i set a image from "my picture" as wallpaper then it does not change. but if i set a image from webshot it changes.
This whole thing happens only ones after start up and after that it runs fine.

    3) Recently i've noticed that some shortcuts are missing from my start menu. that include calculator, paint and the games. i dont know whether they are missing from the hard drive or not because i dont know there locations. But at least paint opens when i run "mspaint"

4)when i open a *.txt file ,it opens only after a message "windows cant find the file"

    5) Xp help wont open

All these problems seem like a dangerous virus but norton antivirus cant find any.
i regularly update nav and checked all the basic things like defrag ,scan disc, sfc, spyware checks etc.I use a awefully slow internet connection so it is very difficult to perform online virus scan.
please help, i desperately need it

The first thing I see is your Processor is marginal for windows Xp as is your RAM 128 is not enough for XP's robust features, very resource heavy O/S. Now the thing I would do is first goto my computer > right click > properties > advanced tab under performance click settings, then check the circle for best performance apply ok exit. See if that improves speed, next if your system were over a 1200 or so with 256 RAM I would suggest you download spybot S&D make sure you update first then run you may have spywear hiding in your system they can cause real problems. good luck

Something I forgot to mention blackviper has a good listing of windows XP services that can be disabled and there are lots of them that do not need to be running, this will help with performance.

thank you guys for all the help.
let me start replying one by one.

Auser : i changed to the best performance setting but the problem is that as my said in my first post(problem no 2) my system roll back to original view. Well it did increase the speed a bit but i miss the sexy looks of xp! Well i updated spybot and found gator in my comp and fixed it.

i visited the black viper site. But i'm afraid to try some of the tricks mentioned in the link http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/supertweaks.htm like disabling system restore or setting virtual memory to zero. I would like to know the expert opinion on that. I have also downloaded
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/Files/XPServices.zip. But it is too greek for me so plz explain it a bit to me. I mainly do simple multimedia works like animation and video editing with my comp. and not a game freek at all. so what basic service should i require?

keebs: if i go for re-install should my softwares will stop working? should i upgrade the system or perform uninstall>install

motherboard: fixed them. here is the hjt log

thanks for all the help again!

Somak In Windows NT4/2000/XP you bring up the services by start > control panel > performance&maintenance > administrative tools > left click services and thishttp://www.answersthatwork.com/] has the basic programs you can disable and offers better help that black viper just browse thru them a-z its will take a little time but you will see a difference in performance. I too run XP Pro with a P4 2.0 with 256 DDR Ram and this improved the speed of my system quite a bit enough that I now run my system at best apperance with no lag Open your sevices and start at the top and pick the first service running check with the link about action, all the way to your last running service. hope this helps..
Dont give up on XP its a very robust and stable O/S I have used 95 98 ME and XP and 98 was the best for stability but XP offers the end user so much more, once you get your system running properly you will love XP.. :)
