I helped a friend set up her new hp pavillion pc running xp and all went well except setting up the scanner. I realized it was probably the wrong drivers on her software for xp, so I went to the scanner site (Genius) and downloaded their xp drivers. Now I know this must sound like a dufus of a question, but when I went to device manager to upgrade the scanner driver to the one I had downloaded, I couldn't locate the scanner. What should I be looking under? Or how can I update the driver? Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the reply, Hewee, but it seems Microsoft says to go to the scanner manufacturer to get the drivers - which I did. My problem is I don't know how to identify the scanner in device manager in order to get it to use the driver I downloaded.

Many scanners don’t show up in Device Manager but in Scanners and Cameras in Control Panel or under their own heading in Control Panel.

You can often also find it in Add Hardware, where you should be able to install a new driver.

Most scanner drivers just install as software rather than as a driver. If the driver is an EXE file or unzips to one you should be able to just click on the file.

    bjc90278,

    Your welcome.
Sorry I can not help anymore then that I don't have XP or even an scanner. But in device manager just check ever thing there by clicking the + to open each tree. If it's a USB then it should be under the USB section. Don't have that either. Will just got new PC that has the ports but nothing to hook up to it so don't know what shows up.

Thanks for your help - just doesn't seem to work or pick up the driver I downloaded. She might just get newer scanner.

Make sure you've got USB support enabled in the bios setup.
