I upgraded my XP Pro to service pack 2, it seems like this computer is much slower starting, is it a good idea to have SP2 or not? I don't like the drop in performance.

How long since to installed SP2?

What you do and how often you do it will depend on how you use your
computer. A suggested routine may include:

    1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.
    2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.
    3. Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
    Cleanup with
Temporary Internet Files, Offline Web Pages (optional), System Restore (
    more Options tab )
and Recycle Bin selected for deletion. If you have more than one drive /
    partition you may
need to do this operation for each drive / partition.
    4. Remove Cookies. Start, Control Panel, Internet Options, General, Delete
    Cookies.
    5. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Clean Temporary Internet Files, Cookies and other temporary files:

I have had it installed for about a week or so. What does compacting the folders do? I try to keep them clean

I guess I am wondering if I need SP2 on my machine or not. I know there is greater security but the buzz I am hearing is that its more trouble than its worth.

Follow the above links and it will help you to make a decision . Many have installed SP2 without any trouble and many seem to have trouble . Good Luck

I have noticed that the first few times that you boot xp after sp2 it is slower. I have installed sp2 on about 6 pc's wihthout any problems. I would reccomend keeping it becuase of the various security enhancements and bug fixes. Wait a while and see what happens.

    Yep!
Mine was noticeably slower for a few days after installing SP2, but it settled down pretty quickly. Go figure??
A few of the techies at work reckon that SP2 has put some new life into a few tired old systems??
Try it for a week and see.

    Cheers,

    Buck.
