    HI, HELP HELP!

I have been trying to update my XP Home Edition and about halfway through the install process, I get a pop up that says "access denied" and I have to terminate the update. I've had problems trying to load "Spybot Search and Destory" as well and I think this is related. I have a registry entry that might be the cause of the problem: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.disabled

Here is a HijackThis log that I just ran:

I had the same problem with access denied. This is what I had to do to correct it before installing. Maybe it will help you?? Good luck!

    Permission

    1. Click Start->Run, type "regedit" (without quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.
    2. Navigate to the following registry key by expanding the "+" beside the registry tree in the left pane:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

    3. Right click HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT in the left pane and choose Permissions
    4. Click the button Add..., and then type "everyone".
    5. Click Check Names and then click OK.
    6. Highlight Everyone under "Group or user names", check "Full Control" in the lower pane and click Apply.
    7. Click Advanced, and check the box "replace all permission entries on child object..." Then, click Apply.
    8. Exit and try to install Service Pack 2 again.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2 Follow this link to a list of files that conflict with SP2 I see you have Zone Alarm and it is on the list . Check for others as well . You can either uninstall conflicting programs using add/remove and reinstall them after installing SP2 or do not install SP2 .You may also try the program site ( in this case Zone Alarm ) to look for an update if using SP2. Read all the information on this site about SP2 and problems / no problems then make an informed choice .
