On my laptop with XP Pro SP2, I get frequent and seemingly random System Event Notification sounds (XP Balloon.wav). I can not figure out what is causing them. I get them all the time. I have checked the Event Viewer and I can find no entries that seem to correspond. I cleared the event logs and the next time I got the event sound I checked the logs and they were still clear. How can I find out what is causing these? I get no error msgs and everything seems to be running fine apart from these frequent popping noises. Are there more logs I should looking at other than the ones the Event Viewer offers?

No, there are no entries since I cleared the log about an hour ago. But, I still get the event sounds.

It is not the balloon notifications. It is the Sys Event notification sound which happens to be names "Windows XP Balloon.wav". I guess I could just disable that in the sound scheme. Still, I'd like to know what is triggering it so often.

    >> since the computer is a laptop -- test both on battery and ac separately. Power events can trigger these. Possibly you have a bad connection to the power adapter and it is switching back and forth between AC and Battery.

I've had this for awhile so sys restore isn't an option. Like I said, it doesn't seem to present a problem as everything is running smoothly. I was more curious than anything else.

Reading up on what this notification notifies about -- my gut feeling is that it's a power issue.

If you are connected to a power adapter -- you could have a loose or intermittant connection causing the system to switch back and forth between battery and AC.

It would be interesting to know whether you ever see the message when only running on battery power.
