On my other home desktop, we have begun getting the following message:

"This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any usaved changes will be lost. This shut down was initiated by NT AUTHORITY/System
Time remaining: 1:00

The system process C:Windows/System 32/services.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code: -1073741819 the system will now shut down and restart."

Then it shuts down.

It's the kid's computer so I'm not sure what they've been doing but undoubtedly a lot of "IMing".

I scanned with Trend Micro's virus scan. It found about 31 things which I've deleted. Previously I scanned with Norton's in safe mode. It didn't find the things Tren Micro did. Have run AdAware. At times it's running very slow. Sometimes it doesn't start. Clearly something is affecting it but very irratically.

Can I post my HijackThis log and ask for some help or suggestions? Thanks.

It's up to date. I ran it prior to the Trend Micro scan.

Did you refer me to the W32. Blaster Worm Removal Tool because of something you saw in my HijackThis log?

No the message you posted is the symptom of blaster

After you remove it post a new log

Apparently, the blaster removal tool didn't find anything.

When I turned the computer on this morning, it gave the same shutdown message. I ran "shutdown.exe -a" to stop the process. Then everything slowed down. I couldn't run HijackThis. Task Manager wouldn't shut everything down. I had to turn the computer off manually.

After I started it back up, I was able to run HijackThis. I've done another HijackThis log this morning and attached it.

Now that I'm thinking about it, seems like after going through 2 or 3 shutdowns (manual) and restarts yesterday, it may have become somewhat stable. That's how I could use the removal tool. But as I said, this morning when I started up, I got the one minute shutdown dialog box.

See anything in the log that looks suspicious? Thanks.

The solution for that has been available for over a year and a half. See a previous post regarding the blaster worm. If the security updates had been done, this would not have occurred in the first place. A good reason to keep current with them.

Although I haven't yet installed SP-2, I've been very careful to update XP everytime Microsofts live update announces critical updates.

Is the solution you referred to the Blaster worm removal tool that MFDnSC referred me to in an earlier post?

Is your Norton up to date or has the subscription to it expired

SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
AdAware SE http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
SpyBot S&D 1.3 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their
definition updates
and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything
they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Get the Lop Uninstaller at this link

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/downloads.htm

Close all browser windows and run the uninstaller.

Then print this out and boot to safe mode

Fix these with HiJack
