XP takes ages to shut down

Hello, newbe here... well kinda... I'm posting for my dad who has just got a new HP laptop. We also just installed broadband with BT and updated all the software.

The problem now is, when we goto close down the computer, it takes ages, doesn't seem to do any thing for ages. A error box comes up for "ccApp" which is part of norton antivirus (apparently) It literally takes about 4mins to close down.

We have been using firewalls and did virus check.

Any advice to fix this?

You are correct- ccApp is a component of Norton AntiVirus. Is it an actual error box, or just a "Close Program" box? Are you up-to-date with all your Windows updates, considering this is a new computer, and do you have the latest definitions and program updates for your Norton product?

It couldn't hurt to download Hijack This (save it to a PERMANENT FOLDER) and without fixing anything, post a log file here for the experts (not myself- no HJT pro :eek: ) to have a look over.

You may have a lot of running processes (background tasks) running, which may be the reason why the computer takes forever to shut off because it has to close all of them.

Its one of those boxes u click "Wait" or "end now". clicking end now just clears the screen thennothing....for a while!

Been reading about the Hijack prog. I'll follow some links and post.

Done full updates on windows and norton.

Thanks for the link DFW. I followed Symatec's instructions but still have the problem.

Any other advice?

Try and shut down NAV buy right clicking on the NAV icon in the task bar and select exit, shutdown or close NAV, bring up the task manager buy pressing ctrl,alt and delete at the same time, go into processes and close CCAPP, wait a few mins and shut down laptop, if things shut down ok, I would say uninstall and reinstall NAV, then update it again, that may help, when I had this problem when I used to use NAV the only thing that worked in the end was to lower the The WaitToKillServiceTimeout value in the registry which allows you to specify a length of time that the service control manager must wait for services to complete the shut-down request. Yhis is a last result, it's better to fix the problem than just cover it up. If you have not just paid for NAV you could always try one of the free antivirus like AVG, but getting NAV off your system may take some time as well, but there are a lot good people on this site that could help you with that, did you note the info about firewalls in my last post.

Yeah, I uninstalled Zone Alarm, didn't use it anyway.

NAV came free and I've got 3 months trial. I might try the uninstall thing tomorrow, dont think I got the disk in the pack, I suppose I can goto the site but hope it won't effect my trial period.

If you dont have a disk then the NAV is probly built in the sysytem restore disk or a on partition on the harddrive, to reinstall it again you may have some HP tools on the start/programs menu to allow you to reinstall programs that are built into the system restore partition, so have a look before you uninstall, if you are going to put back on. If I were you I would just get shot of and install AVG.

Just simply do this: Clear Startup Environment. Start->Run->type 'msconfig'->go to startup tab->click 'disable all' button->go to the services tab->click the 'Hide All Microsoft Services' button then 'disable all' button->click apply, then close. You will probably be prompted to restart the computer. If not, go ahead and restart just in case. See if this works. That's about all I can think of that no one else really suggested. Hope this helps.

DWF- I can't seem to shut down NAV. It only lets me disable virus protection and internet security. When I try to close ccapp from the list, it says access denied.

I tried disabling all the progs and shut down is fine but, obviously, i don't have any progs.

Do u think i should do a system restore? I only had it 2 weeks so I dont have anything to lose.

You could but that is only going to reinstall NAV, if it's in the system restore, it was in my HP system restore, and that is what is giving you problems. But you could try if you what to keep it, If I were in your shoes I would uninstall it, and get AVG free.

No firewall in avg free, put ZA back on, If you are going to uninstall NAV it be a good ideal to have to download and install easycleaner

Do not use the duplicate file cleaner, when you have unistalled NAV reboot an run the registry cleaner, select all, then delete. then reboot.
