    I am running XP professional.

I can't get any updates at all.

The Security center showed automatic update ON and I went to
check for the latest updates from windows updates.

I received a window which stated the site cannot continue because one or more
of these window services is not running.

Automatic Updates showed no Status and Startup Type as DISABLED.

I clicked on Automatic Updates and went to the Automatic Updates Properties.

I changed the startup type to AUTOMATIC and hit APPLY. The startup type did change
to AUTOMATIC and the start button worked

I set the service status to START but I didn't know what the start parameters should be.

I exited and received error message 1058:

"The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or becuase it has no enabled
    devices associated with it."

Later when I tried to change the startup type from DISABLED to AUTOMATIC it wouldn't APPLY
    and reverted to DISABLED.

Any ideas on how I can get updates, either automatically or manually?

    Thanks,

    John

I wonder if going to the Windows Updates site and selecting the 'Custom' option would work? That's how I do it because I have chosen not to allow Automatic updating.

When I go to windows update

When and where would I see the 'custom' option?

Can you tell me how I can get to your homepage?

I checked in the Member List but I could not find any pointer to your home page.

    Thanks,

    John

Thanks, I did find the Fix Windows Update list.

I have a couple of questions.

I have SP2 but not SP3. Is this fix only for issues raised
    after installing SP3?

I checked my Security updates and the last one I have received was 8/15/2008.

What does the program regsvr32 do?

    Thanks for your help.

I used resvr32 on all the suggested .dll files.

All were successful except msxml2.dll (not found).

    I installed Windows installer 3.1.
I ran Windows Genuine Advantage and my product is genuine.
Do I need msxml2.dll? If so where do I get it? Where do I install it?

I went to the Windows Update site but

I received a window which stated the site cannot continue because one or more
of these window services is not running.

    Thanks,

    John

What were the Windows services that were not running?

The message was about three services:
    automatic updates
    Background Intelligence Transfer service (BITS)
    Event Logs

BITS and Event Logs were OK,

Automatic Updates was DISABLED and the status was not started.

Visit the Malware Removal and HJT Logs forum, read the "sticky" first post in the forum, then post a HijackThis log in that forum.
