Upon switch on the computer passes the POST screen and then displays a black screen with a flashing cursor on the top left, this is as far as it gets.

If I boot the XP CD and select recovery consol I can log on to \windows and have performed various functions , including chkdsk, fixboot and Bootcfg /Rebuild. But still it wont boot

I have the following files in the root of c:\

boot.ini
NTLDR
NTDetect.com

If I boot from the XP CD and select install XP, it fails to find the Current Windows installation so a rerpair cannot be made.

This is the 4th time this has happend, previously wiping the disk clean with a third party secuity wipe, will then allow windows to be reinstalled (A normal format didnt work), The original hard drive which was less than a year old has been exchanged for another after the first failure, together with new ram.

I can boot to Windows Live! CD and see all the folders on the C:\ drive including windows etc, it just wont boot or repair.

On the previous times this has happened it would last for 2 to 4 months without a problem, then one day it just wont boot.

I could just wipe the hard disk and reinstall windows now, but it seems pointless when i know its gouing to fail again at a later date.

Could there be a problem with the NTLDR itself or a virus?
