My computer (Tiny,AMD, Athlon 64,3800) was supplied with windows XP Home with SP1
I have installed scurity updates automatically and I am now being nagged to install SP2.
Each time I do so, my desktop loses all the icons and I am left with just the Backdrop.
I can access programs via "alt+ctrl+del+browse" but can not get the desktop back.
At the end of the install I get an error message which says - cannot write to MS explorer, etc
This same problem also occurs with a friend's machine, which has an AMD chip.
The only solution so far is System Restore which of course reverts to SP1..............Help!

sounds like you have something running in the background that is causing this. run MSCONFIG and from "start up" see how many programs have a green check mark on them and uncheck the programs you don't need to start up when ever you power on the CPU.

my nephew had the same problem and after he disabled some progs, he had all his desktop icons and the start menu back
