Windows XP Home Edition.

Got the following error after installing Avast! and it having picked up malware in winlogon.exe - I stupidly restarted the computer.

Stop: c000021a {fata system error}
The windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with the status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000)

Reformatting ISNT an option i'd like to go with.
I have the CD's.
Have already performed chkdsk /r , fixboot & fixmbr to no avail.
Last known good config tried also. Safe mode is a no go.

For some reason a 2nd repair isnt an option when booting to XP disc.

...could I possibly copy Winlogon.exe to the hard drive using salamander?

Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance!

What service pack are you running? It may be beneficial to extract the winlogon.exe file from what ever service pack your on. You say you have the CDs, if the cds have any type of recovery environment I would do it that way. You just need access to command prompt.
