First off, thank you so much for providing this help. You're awesome.

I'm another one of those who's having problems with the inability to access any administrative functions. I'm running Windows XP. Can't access Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, etc., getting the message that "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." It's a standalone home PC. I'm also getting a popup every 10 seconds or so claiming to be from Symantec, saying "Scanning message 1 of 1". I didn't even realize I had Symantec on my system. I was able to disable an option to scan every 20 seconds, but it started right back up again. VERY annoying. This is the third (assumed) virus I've gotten (and I'm careful!), but it's the first one I haven't been able to get rid of myself without having to post for help.

I downloaded Highjack This as suggested in some of the other threads, and here is the log file I got:

    Welcome to TSG.

Please print these instructions for reference, as you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from Here or Here.

Note: You will need to run this tool while having an Internet Connection. The tool will download other files while running.
    1. Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
    2. The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
    3. If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional files from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.
    4. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
    5. Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt).
Please post the C:\fixwareout\report.txt ), along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.

Just for interest's sake, I'm still getting the administrator message, but am no longer getting the Symantec popup. Weird, since nothing's actually been done yet, right?

ETA: Never mind, the popup's back.

    We are nowhere near done.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    1. Close any open browsers.

    2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    • ...
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

    1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
    • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
    • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

    2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

    3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
    • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
    • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
    • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
    • Click Done
    • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
    • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
    4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
    • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
    • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
    • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
    • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
    5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

    Yep :)

    Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    Restart your computer.

Turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

    To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

You can mark your thread "Solved" from the Thread Tools drop down menu.
