"Your computer is infected!" Popup message. Computer infected with Trojan

Hi, this is my first time posting here.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2, and my computer has a virus that, at first, was giving me a tool-tip-like message from the system tray saying "Your computer is infected! ..." and something about installing a scam antivirus program. I've done a lot of searching for this issue and have seen many cases of it. Posts on other forums offered specialized programs like "Smitfraudfix.exe" and others that I was unable to get to work.

I've updated my Java (which stopped the annoying "Your computer is infected!" popup), removed my Temporary Internet Files, and run Avast! and Avira every time I restart my computer, but each time there seems to be malware that needs removed. Can someone please help me clean this virus / trojan off of my machine completely?

Thank you for your time, here is a HJT log from the time of this post:

Hello and welcome to TSG

IMPORTANT

Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
To make cleaning this machine easier:-
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please reply with:-
  • Combofix log
  • New HJT log
  • Uninstall list

Hi, thanks for your response.

I downloaded ComboFix to my desktop. When I double click the .exe it shows a loading bar near the icon on my desktop. When the loading bar fills up to 100% it dissapears, then nothing happens. I'm not prompted with anything at all. Do you have any suggestions? In the meantime I'll try removing and re-downloading ComboFix.exe.

Also, I was checking for the file C:\ComboFix.txt, to see if it had run without showing any dialog and found another file, C:\Bug.txt that I don't remember. Is this filename something you recognize as coming from HJT or ComboFix? It's contents are pasted below:

PUSHD "C:\32788R22FWJFW"
SET "Comspec=C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.execf"
IF NOT EXIST C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe GOTO Not_NT

Once again, thank you for your help and patience with my issue.

Hi there, before we continue with cleaning:-

Multiple Anti-virus Programs
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti-virus programs running in memory at once:
avast! Antivirus
AVG 8.5
Avira AntiVir
Symantec AntiVirus
Windows Live OneCare

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two or more anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. Please remove all but one of them NOW.

While in ADD/REMOVE programs please also uninstall the following:-

  • iWin Games (remove only)
    Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
    Viewpoint Media Player
    Viewpoint Toolbar
LiveUpdate 3.0 (Symantec Corporation) ONLY UNINSTALL THIS IF SYMANTEC IS ONE OF THE AV’S YOU REMOVE
    Spybot - Search & Destroy
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 Both outdated

When done please post a NEW HJT and a NEW Uninstall list

Please reply with:-
  • New HJT log
  • Uninstall list

Hi, I've removed all but Symantec. (The machine was set up by a college's tech desk crew and Symantec's uninstaller is password protected :( still looking for a way around this)

Hi. Sorry my fault really, but that’s the one that is outdated and is no good to you in any way, shape or form. The default password for uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition clients is: Symantec.

See if that works, and I will have to get you to reinstall, Avira or Avast etc. ONLY ONE.

Let me know how it goes.

#11 ·
Hi again, I tried to uninstall Symantec with the password "Symantec" and was told it was incorrect. I also tried "symantec" and "SYMANTEC" just for fun but no luck.

I saw an article somewhere about editing your registry to disable this password prompt, but I thought I'd ask for your advice on this.

Also, I'm planning to reinstall AVG Free once I get rid of Symantec.

#12 ·
Lets try Nortons way first , follow these directions to download the Norton Removal Tool and run it to remove the above programs.
  • Click Here to download the Norton removal tool
  • Click Save and save the file to your desktop
  • Close all Norton Application windows you may have open, and double-click on Norton_Removal_Tool.exe to start the removal tool. Windows Vista users will have to right-click on the file and select "Run as Administrator"
  • After the removal tool finishes, you should be prompted to restart your computer.
  • Once the computer restarts, hoptfully your Norton product should be uninstalled.

IMPORTANT Make sure you install and update an Antivirus Now if it works.

#13 ·
When running Norton Removal Tool, I'm told "The following applications must be removed through Add/Remove Programs before continuing: "

Symantec Antivirus 9

I don't recall installing this in the past (however I could have a long time ago and forgot). I thought the only version I still had was Symantec Corporate Edition 10.1. The above uninstall and HJT logs would still be accurate with regard to Symantec products if they can help you find any trace of Symantec 9. Thanks again for your continued help

That is just the corporate version we are trying to uninstall.

It was suggested to me that you try Revo uninstaller, although I don’t know if the password will get in the way of this too.

http://www.revouninstaller.com/

Give it a go, and I will dig a bit deeper.

Hi there, I think you will have to contact the college explain the situation and ask what the password is. Otherwise contact Symantec support. In the mean time get your AV of choice up and running and keep Symantec disabled. There could be a host of problems if we try a force uninstall, so better to try the safest option first.

So lets continue getting the nasties out.

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

  • R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...ch/search.html <http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/yme/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search/search.html>
    O4 - Startup: iWin Desktop Alerts.lnk = C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\iWin Games\DesktopAlerts\DesktopAlerts.exe

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked

COMBOFIX-Script
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code:
    FCopy::
    c:\windows\$NtUninstallKB923845$\qmgr.dll | c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB923845\SP2QFE\qmgr.dll
    c:\windows\$NtUninstallKB923845$\qmgr.dll | c:\windows\system32\dllcache\qmgr.dll
    c:\windows\$NtUninstallKB923845$\qmgr.dll | c:\windows\system32\bits\qmgr.dll
    c:\windows\$NtUninstallKB923845$\qmgr.dll | c:\windows\system32\qmgr.dll

    DDS:

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please reply with:-
  • Combofix log
  • New HJT log

How is the computer running now? Are you still getting the warnings?

Lets try and get the Symantec services to stop running:-

Click Start then run
In the Run box type services.msc
Find each of the following services (one at a time)

  • Symantec Event Manager (ccEvtMgr)
    Symantec Settings Manager (ccSetMgr)
    Symantec AntiVirus Definition Watcher (DefWatch)
    SAVRoam (SavRoam)
    Symantec SPBBCSvc (SPBBCSvc)
Double click on the service, Select Stop in the Service Status and disabled in the Startup Type, select apply after each one.

If it won’t let you because of the password situation, just leave it as it is and continue on. If it does let you please reboot after it is done.

The computer seems fine to me now. Kaspersky shows some dangerous sounding things as you'll see in the log (maybe they're not as bad as I think). But I haven't gotten any spyware popup messages or things of that nature since you've started helping me debug. I'm also planning to contact Norton Support tomorrow regarding a bypass for the uninstaller password. I called the college that set up the machine and their Support guy won't answer my voicemails or emails :(

The computer seems fine to me now. Kaspersky shows some dangerous sounding things as you'll see in the log (maybe they're not as bad as I think).
Kaspersky is fine, they are items in quarantine or the System restore. We are going to set a new restore point, so we will be flushing those old ones away, Qoobox will go when we remove Combofix.

You can navigate and empty this folder:-
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine
If you cannot, for some reason, the item is in quarantine, so will cause no harm and will go when Symantec is finally uninstalled.

So if you are not having any further problems, I would suggest you proceed as follows as everything looks great.

MBAM and ATF are great tools for you to keep and use on a regular basis.

Remove Combofix
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK ( please note the space between Combofix and the /, it is needed)
The above procedure will reset your System Restore and clear out the backups and quarantines created during the course of this fix.

Now that the infection is gone lets try to keep it that way by following the below recommendations.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.
