I am using Win XP. I am unable to open the dialog box for adding or removing new software when entering from the control panel. Also I cannot open the properties dialog box of IE from the desktop. What hapens on both is that they flash open and close up right away.

    Download Hijackthis.
Create a folder on your hard drive and save it there.
Unzip the file and extract it to the folder you have created.
Scan your machine, then click on Save Log.

Post a copy back here and someone will be happy to review it.

Don't make any changes until instructed to do so.

    To fix control panel,Go here:
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

    Scroll down to #296
click on it,when the box opens, select open
    reboot

Maybe i'm dense but what is"properties dialog box of IE from the desktop"?

In any case the above fix should fix both of your problems

Zack, you have asked the same ? in 3 posts, please stick to 1 otherwise it can be too confusing ie.not knowing what has or has not been tried.

Right clicking on the desktop shortcut for IE and selecting 'Properties' opens the same dialog as 'Tools -> Internet Options' (within the browser), without having the actual browser opened.
