I have a friend who said that I should fully uninstall Zone Alarm and download and install Kerio. Is this just a question of individual's tastes, or is it generally agreed that one is better than the other? I am not unhappy with Zone Alarm Pro and don't want to make the switch unless there is objective data indicating that Kerio is better or that it is preferred by most forum readers here.

    Any advice?

I have heard mixed views. Not really sure what is better.

If Zone alarm works for you, then keep it. For most people a plug and play firewall like ZA works perfectly well.

I use Kerio because I find it easier to configure the way I want it. It has a lot more configureable options, but is much harder to set up correctly without causing problems.

I like the way that Kerio allows me to specify certain applications be allowed to acces the net via specific ports at specific times of day or only allow it to use certain ports and block other applications from using that port. I haven't found a way to do that with ZA

Having said that ZA is one of the best firewalls for normal web use. I install it on many computers that I fix to protect them

I used ZA for a while and it gave me good protection. I stopped using ZA because it was using too much of the System Resources. I now use Sygate and get the same type of good protection and this program is using about 50% less of the System Resources.

I believe Kerio is also a good program that will give you good protection and uses a lot less System Resources than ZA uses. I suppose if System Resources is not an issue with you, then stick with ZA.

    Just my opinions...

I also used ZA for ages, and a few months ago switched to Kerio. It's just as easy to use as ZA, but harder to tweak, as it has loads of options as dvk01 mentioned.

If you do not tweak the options, it runs just as smoothly as ZA . . .better as it uses less resources, and only has itself to rely on, instead of ZAs vsmon program needed to run in conjunction.

All in all, if you are happy with it, and it in't causing you issues, then why change?

I live by that quote. ;)
